Revolutionary medicine and advanced healthcare solutions

The AMASA project builds on earlier research conducted under the "Tracing Pharmaceuticals in South Asia" (TPSA) initiative, funded by the UK's ESRC/DFID poverty alleviation programme. This previous work examined the entire pharmaceutical system in India and Nepal, focusing on public health and population-level approaches to drug delivery. It emphasized the need to understand clinical evidence for medicines and how national and international regulations affect their production, cost, and accessibility.

AMASA expands this research to Uganda, South Africa, and India, investigating the interplay between pharmaceutical regulations and the formal and informal healthcare networks in these countries. The project aims to inform health policy by addressing issues of accessibility, affordability, acceptability, and the appropriate use of essential medicines. National and international stakeholders will be engaged throughout the research process to ensure that findings effectively influence policy and practice, with potential benefits extending to other developing nations and global health agencies.

AMASA Project Outputs: Advancing Access to Medicines in Low-Resource Settings

The AMASA project centers on enhancing access to essential medicines in Africa and South Asia by addressing regulatory challenges, distribution inequities, and policy barriers. Its publications explore topics such as the proliferation of irrational drug combinations, delays in medicine registration in South Africa, and legislative needs in India. The project also examines the role of civil society and healthcare workers in improving medicine access and highlights geographical disparities in pharmacy distribution. By presenting evidence-based insights, AMASA contributes to discussions on improving medicine availability and optimizing health systems in resource-limited settings.

Working Groups: Collaborative Efforts for Project Success

During the project inception workshop in Mumbai in the summer of 2010, twelve working groups were formed to guide various aspects of the initiative. These include eight key groups alongside additional teams focused on finance, knowledge management and dissemination, project management, and methodology, ensuring a comprehensive and collaborative approach to achieving project objectives.
